I'm a physician, and this story was fascinating to hear. One of the many reasons your body may not have accepted the severed thumb was that when youre a child (ESPECIALLY with the age you were at the time), your body's defense/immune response is much different than adults. Children have an innate response meaning that their body is not experienced and adapted yet. So when you introduce a foreign object or material (your severed thumb), it goes almost to an emergency mode and completely shuts it down and won't take it in. I'm almost certain that if this had happened when you were 8, 15, or even the age you are now, the surgery would have been successful because your body is drastically more mature and experienced. I remember the first story I ever heard about this missing thumb was that he was at the beach saving a baby after a shark had been spotted. The story goes he saved the baby, but lost half the thumb to go on to be one of the best halo & cod players of all time.

True story, there were many more stories growing up with this guy during the Halo days....good times and I still can’t believe he took out that shark in the process.

This is crazy, i literally have a huge scar on my right thumb from a similar incident when i was 18 months old involving an old school exercise bike and one of my older cousins. They were able to re attach it, but wild how similar stories are. Probably a good thing they stopped making bikes like that lmao

Mate, your story is really amazing how you overcome the shame and that stuff. I broke my 2 front teeth when i was a kid, and my feeling are the same as yours, sometimes i feel like weird and don't want to smile, bc i don't like my smile.
