In this video, we talk about the best 3 types of stain for your wood sided home.

A SEMI-TRANSPARENT stain shows a lot of the wood grain and adds just a touch of color to the wood. This can come in many types of colors of course but with a semi-trans stain, you can expect to have a thin layer of protection but a beautiful focus on the natural beauty of the wood. This type of stain should be monitored carefully after a few years.

A SEMI-SOLID stain has more color than the semi-trans but doesn't fully cover up the wood like a full solid stain would. With a semi-solid stain on your home, you can expect more UV protection than a semi-transparent while still enhancing the natural look of the wood. Once properly applied to the wood a semi-solid stain should be expected to last 5 years or in a normal situation.

A SOLID stain will make most siding and even decks look like they've been painted. This option will add more protection to the natural wood, but in most cases hide the natural look of the wood. A solid stain should last longer than the other choices of stain. Once properly applied to the wood a solid stain can be expected to last for an extended period of time up to 10+ years. We find with solid stained homes and decks that over time only part of the wood will need maintaining or replacement while other parts just need a good wash to keep them looking fresh. The solid stain offers the most protection and longevity of your natural wood.

Last year I bought 2 cans of valspar semi transparent ceder tone, this year I bought 2 more of the same. Now I have 2 different colors of siding, with the new cans being ORANGE!!. ( I had safety glasses on instead of my regular glasses and didn’t notice the difference until I was finished!).

I currently have Benjamin Moore Arborcoat exterior oil-based semi-solid stain on exterior pine accent logs on my home. It has been on my logs for about 2 years. I tried applying Benjamin Moore Woodluxe oil-based semi-solid stain over the existing stain in a test area, but it did not seem to cover well, after about one month there were areas that looked like it had washed off. All of the instructions for stains these days seem to call for removal of the existing stain, getting down to bare wood. This is next to impossible for for me.
Is there an oil-based semi-solid stain that I can apply directly over the existing oil-based semi-solid stain without having to strip the logs to bare wood?
Is it possible that the Woodluxe did not cover well because the existing Arborcoat is not sufficiently weathered to accept new stain?
Any ideas?

It’s more about luxury and your budget man a semi transparent it’s beautiful but more money for maintenance so it’s not just about budget luxury always costs more !
