For the ants, this is literally a zombie apocalypse

Doesn't affect the brain, it's controls the muscles, your brain is not affected so you are a prisoner in your own body. Think about that.

Fun fact, it does not touch the brain, it controls the muscles.

It's not manipulating the bug's "brain". It's operating the bug's muscles independently. If ants were conscious, they would be locked in their bodies, powerless to move itself.

Not only do they drag infected ants away, but the ants which carried the infected ant away do not return to the nest. They commit suicide once the job is done.

So the only reason these things can't survive in humans is due to our body temperature and how we fight off infections via a fever. However, if these cordyceps do adapt to rising temperature they could start surviving in humans. The first humans to go are the ones that are immunocompromised where their body don't go into a fever to fight off infection. Honestly pretty scary if you think about it.

This could be the start of a zombie apocalypse if we really wanted to bio weapon it

Fun fact! The mushrooms don't actually infect the nervous system. They go for the "muscles". So, the bugs become prisoners in their own bodies, marching to their inevitable death. Which i think is creepier imo.

If the cordyceps finds its way into humans without dying I better not become a runner

It’s all scary until you realize people take the fungus as a supplement and local tribes snort them.

News flash: there are mushrooms that can alter human brain chemistry too.

The craziest part is that this mushroom is edible

I literally just tried deep fried cordyceps grown on meat. It was very tasty and a good crispy snack.

Wait so what they saying is the mushroom is taking control of the bugs means that the mushroom is a living creature. Everyone let me know if I’m wrong or not. Someone explain

Another fun fact, cordyceps has metabolites which cause a host to reach a high point, it’s is here where cordyceps usually will form a sclerotia with parathecium that contain its spores🫡 it’s thought that they use sterile modified asci (spore container) inside the parathecia to generate pressure to exit through a tiny hole in the top. (From the top of my head after the Class Sadariomycetes lecture
