Poland, Warsaw || Castle Square

Показать описание
Castle Square is a historic square in front of the Royal Castle – the former official residence of Polish monarchs – located in Warsaw, Poland. It is a popular meeting place for tourists and locals. The Square is of triangular shape with Sigismund's Column in the center, and surrounded by historic townhouses. It marks the beginning of the bustling Royal Route extending to the south.
Royal Castle is a palace which formerly served throughout the centuries as the official residence of the rulers of Poland. It is located in the Castle Square, at the entrance to the Warsaw Old Town. The castle dates back to the 14th century when it was the official residence of the Dukes of Masovia. It was conquered many times by invaders from afar. Burned and looted by the Nazi Germans following the Invasion of Poland in 1939 and almost completely destroyed in 1944, the Castle was completely rebuilt and reconstructed during 1971-1984. Royal Castle and the Old Town are both UNESCO World Heritage Site. Museum is free on Sunday.
Sigismund's Column is located in Castle Square, Warsaw. It was erected in 1644 in memory of King Sigismund III Vasa who had moved Poland's capital from Kraków to Warsaw in 1596.
