Follow along as Colleen crafts some whittled wood crochet hooks! This video has been guest edited!

One of the redwood saplings died in the garden, so instead of composting it, I'm putting it to good use. I've left it to dry/season for a few months, and it's turned out to be very nice to carve!

I've always enjoyed whittling and wood carving, but don't really get much opportunity to just play around and make some wood shavings. These crochet hook shapes are very improvised, but so far have been quite usable for some larger worsted yarns.

I'm using some basic Dremel attachments with my dremel, as well as using an xacto blade to get the desired shape.

Once they're sanded, they work best with a coat of finish. I've been experimenting with different coatings, but so far spray clear enamel has worked out nicely. You can also brush on clear 2-part epoxy, or even rub on some wood oil or wood varnish.
