One Minute Bunkai: Chudan Uke #1

preview_player
Показать описание
The basic Chudan uke or middle level block (defense) application, followed by a hidden application. In this example note that the technique really does not change in any way, it is the same move just applied differently and positioned at a different point in the timeline of this defensive scenario. Also it is preceded by a mid level punch which sets up the control lock. Don't be afraid to shuffle techniques to come up with effective scenarios that work for you, remember you must make Karate work for you, it cannot be forced, it must flow naturally.

Yes you have it! Don't go by the common premise that there are basic techniques and advanced ones. Everything is equally important, an advanced technique is nothing more than a basic technique done very well by a skilled and experienced karateka. Many today go down the wrong path of wanting to learn "advanced" kata as if that will make them better, what makes you better is time, patience, and the right teacher. A teacher that is doing real karate.

Looks great! One of the most important things I´ve learned in recent years is that basic techniques can be applied in many ways. A block is not just a block and so on. It opens ups so many possibilities!

I'm glad to hear you say they amuse in addition to inspire. I have an active sense of humor and I exercise it as often as possible, it keeps me young at heart. I belief laughter prolongs your life or at the very least it makes helps you deal with adversity, depression, swings your mood from negative to positive. Just like training in martial does it empowers you.

Hey Joe, supp!!! Rob is my student, and boy does hit hit hard. He is a real sport for putting up with me on all these videos. I have to say he is one of the most hard working people I have ever met, he is one hell of a marine biologist also.

Use the bone just below the Wrist. For the first basic demonstration in which I hit hard, it requires training and conditioning, lots of Kotekitai, arm and bone pounding with lots of pain and bruises (a Karate-kas friend!) The second application does not involve direct bone impact. But Karate in general is about using your bones therefore - bone conditioning is a prerequisite for all this stuff to work effectively. You can't be a soft momma's boy in karate, you have to get tough and hard.

Good demonstration of karate. The avoidance and simultaneous attack/defense make for very effective combat efficiency. It is important to note that before applying any sort of lock or joint manipulation you must first "sting" your opponent in order to change his mind so that you can then apply the desired tuite/chin-na.

This is a great breakdown. You should do more like this.

Dear Jarno1510,
Yes each of those techniques are individuals, but I use in order lead into the next. 2 completely separate things that blend and can together as one, I use a hit first in order neutralize the opponent into the tuite (grabbing and controlling). I encourage you to think beyond the single technique methodology, be imaginative and flow from one thing to another, this way of working opens many doors and makes life much easier.

That's the most important karate lesson! I couldn't agree more with you!

I know what you meant, altho a bunkai video is not necessarily a vehicle for comedy where it makes you laugh, my sense of humor creeps in from time to time when I find an opportunity to inject it. Like when I use sound effects. But entertaining absolutely is one of my production goals.

Dear bobene9,
The author (Tony James) has not released any of the music in One MInute Bunkai for public release. If at some point he does I will let you know. We appreciate you like it enough to request it though. Tony James is an amazing musician and a solid Karate-ka.

I had an instructor tell me once he was a HPK/TKD "master" and had trained in number of other martial arts that really don't apply to what he does now....I guess cross training never matters (sarcasm).
Good job on your videos and keep up the great work. Inspiring to say the least.

Because there is more than one application, you can't just fit one. Important thing is to get the principle which is like the hub of a wheel, and all the spokes radiate out from the center as possible scenarios each effective in their own way. The baby is fine, its the bath water that is a little stinky. Have a strong kihon and foundation thru rigorous kata, slow it down and focus, hit hard, condition and become hard, everything else will fall into place. But you must find a teacher that knows.

I like where you said to try and hit before you control...my Sensei would always say. uchi, waza, ne....I really enjoy your videos.

I like your videos a lot. In my own study of a different (though similar) style, I often work on bunkai for when I don't block the initial strike. I.e., I get hit, then what do I do. I'd like to see some of your One Minute Bunkai where that first block isn't successful to see how you approach things. :)

Great stuff I've notes that there are some technical similarities with what is taught by Oyata sensei. Any chance on some bunkai from Passai kata in the future?
