UNK political science senior Emily Saadi describes her experience in an international field study course in Northern Ireland. This course is one in a series of courses on political reconciliation and the search for universal rights, a program of courses designed to examine the historical struggle for peace and human rights, both within the US and around the world. These courses take students around the world to a place that has undergone conflict, focusing on how nonviolent social movements have contributed to the advancement of a just peace. Each course focuses on an individual case — such as the civil rights movement in America; the end of apartheid in South Africa; the peace process in Northern Ireland; the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; or the reconciliation process after the Rwandan Genocide— with links made across the cases about the philosophy, strategies, and tactics embedded within these movements.
