In this video, I want to take a quick moment and show you how to perform a basic import into any FileMaker database. This case we are using FM starting point. I've got a fresh copy of FM starting point here. I'm going to click into the contacts data entry screen. I can see I have the one sample record here, that's part of the download. I'm gonna go up to records. I'm gonna go ahead and delete this record right here... And right here I have a sample data download of five thousand names and let's say, for example, that this is a spreadsheet or it could be a tab file or a comma separated file. That's what the CSV is. Basically, it's a data dump or a pile of data that is specifically formatted for importing into another data source or into another database system. So FileMaker can read Excel files, other common ones or CSV or Comma Separated, tab separated. Really, those are the big common ones. FileMaker will not directly read word files.

I'm an amateur Filemaker user currently how to simplify the transfer of date from one Filemaker file to another. Perhaps I would best open File 1 then File 2 and transfer the content of a few fields manually. It would be "cool" however to automate this process. Example: File 1 contains every daily expenditure of any nature. File 2 refers to everything pertaining to my residence. It would be convenient to send "price", "description of expense", "supplier", etc automatically, adding each to already established fields in "File 2". Is the process for Filemaker file 1, to Filemaker file 2 as it is for Excel? (My purpose is that of learning new Filemaker operations.)
