Mapping the Universe with eBOSS: Will Percival Public Lecture

In his Perimeter Public Lecture webcast on April 7, 2021, cosmologist Will Percival will aim to help the audience grasp the enormity of space using the latest results from the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), which created the largest three-dimensional map of the universe ever made and provided profound insights into the physics of the universe in which we live.

*BRAVO!* What a wonderful introduction! An acknowledgement of the original people, their land and your commitment to truth! Fabulous!

My perimeter of understanding cosmology just increased!

Dr. Percival shared a succinct lecture and a clear delivery without dumbing it down at all, in my humble opinion. Thank you for sharing your time and knowledge, sir. Great presentation.

I'm not sure what I liked better. The observations, or the technical aspects of the telescopes being used.

I notice Dr Percival is still an Associate Professor. Is nobody given full professorships and tenure anymore?

Thanks for the best explanation of BAO I've seen. It still seems a very indirect way of measuring the expansion of the universe. I'm sure that the theory and error bars are well established and beyond my ken.
Good luck with Euclid and I hope that the person who places the fibres for Desi is well rewarded.

This is impressive important work, physical evidence is important to make assertions about our universe and prove theories, this is worth an award ❤️👍🇬🇧

We know stars in a galaxy move at different speeds. Some gravitationally accelerated being kicked out of a star cluster. Couldn't galaxies be accelerated by passing close enough to another galaxy to give it a false spectral shift? Especially if it is moving away relative it the observer? I have seen photos of visually interacting galaxies with different redshifts that cannot be explained. I doubt we have type one supernova data on every galaxy in the observable universe to corroborate each galaxies distance. Just a curious armchair astronomer...

I can't wait to hear what they discover in another 5-10 years. Tech and research expanding exponentially, a bit like the universe.

Careful with that liberal bs like in the beginning. We’ve had enough of that. It’s like piling on and jumping on the bandwagon at this point. Don’t bring that into a science conversation

The more you say to not think about before the big bang or what the universe is expanding into....
the more I think about them.

I have enjoyed watching this presentation thank you for the wonderful ones in the past and for the ones coming up in the future. I love the naming tradition that is often used, is a certain sense of humour a mandatory requirement to be allowed to become a

The Universe cannot be mapped to any degree of accuracy the deeper one looks. The problem being is that all galaxies move through space and transform over time. Stars are created and destroyed and black holes grow. When movement and transformation, creation and destruction occur at further and further distances, we can't know what that movement or transformation actually will be in billions of years. Thus, we are mapping an illusion of the past. When we observe the CMB, it reflects its scale when the microwave were emitted. Basically put, we are seeing the CMB's 'baby photos'. Not the CMB as a full grown adult after 13 billion years due to the light cone inversion from most distant to most local.

Correction, Mapping the observable universe, Any other claim is false and therefore a lie.

What's with all the woke crap at the beginning. Just give me the science bone head. I do not support Marxism.
