Microsoft's Directory Server is Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS). It includes mechanisms for authentication and authorization, as well as a framework for the deployment of additional associated services (AD Certificate Services, AD Federated Services, etc.). It's an object-based LDAP database. Users, computers, and groups are among the most often utilized things. Any variety of logical or business needs can be used to group these objects into organizational units (OUs). The settings for numerous users or computers within an organization can then be centralized using Group Policy Objects (GPOs) linked to OUs.

The function of ADDS:
1. Allows you to have a central server, known as a Domain Controller (DC), that handles all of your network's authentication.
2. Instead of signing on to local PCs, users use your Domain Controller to authenticate.
3. On a network, it keeps information on users, computers, and other resources.
4. AD DS assists administrators in securely managing this information.
5. Allows users to share and collaborate on resources.
6. Directory-enabled programs, such as Microsoft® Exchange, require AD DS.
