Catholic Belgian university ‘deplores’ Pope Francis's comments on role of women in society

Pope Francis has been sharply criticised by one of Belgium’s Catholic universities over his stance on the role of women in society, in a strongly worded press release issued just moments after the pontiff spoke at the college.

Professors and students at UCLouvain, where the 87-year-old pontiff had made a speech on Saturday afternoon, said they wanted to express their 'incomprehension and disapproval' about the pope’s views. Francis went to the university on Saturday to celebrate its upcoming 600th anniversary as part of a weekend trip he is making to Belgium. His speech largely called for global action on climate change, but he also responded to a letter to him from students and professors that had asked about the Catholic church’s teaching on women

Belgian society is plagued with a war against traditional values, I can say as a Belgian citizen.

I'm genuinely so confused by the criticism. He isn't necessarily wrong, is he?

As in most other nations, the civil and criminal laws of Belgium were circumvented, avoided, disregarded with impunity. Why has Belgium suddenly cast disparaging remarks...so richly deserved...upon "the Church", while disregarding its own (Belgium's) failure to prosecute?

Pope should be telling South America to stop logging in the Amazon.

Im genuinely so glad to see so many reasonable people in the comments here who are just as confused as me. It's frankly a worse reflection on the state of dialogue today that people can honestly take such offence to comments like these, so clearly offered to prompt and inspire, intended in charity.
I'm so used to seeing vitriol in the comments section, so this was a welcome change of tone!

You know if it was a cleric from another demographic making these remarks the Press wouldn't be reporting it...

I mean…someone asked a question, and he provided an answer. This is a great example of “don’t ask a question you may not want the answer to.” Just because you don’t like the answer doesn’t mean it isn’t true.

We are living in a world in which the only rational person speaking in public is the pope. What a twist.
