It's really more about control, or rather surrendering control. The ancient one stated this in the first film, which Strange didn't think made sense, but it actually does. A bird doesn't control the winds it flies on any more than a fish controls the waters it swims in. They have to learn to surrender to extra-dimensional forces to learn how to control them. Initially, both were thinking of magic as a force the could make submit to them, rather than work it's will through them. Ned didn't have that hang-up, he surrendered to the magic immedietly. Plus, he said magic ran in his family, so he could actually be a natural born witch.
