Row over how many farms will be affected by inheritance tax policy

Sir Keir Starmer has insisted the "vast majority of farmers" will not be affected by changes to Inheritance Tax (IHT) ahead of a protest outside parliament.

It follows Chancellor Rachel Reeves announcing a 20% inheritance tax that will apply to farms worth more than £1m from April 2026, where they were previously exempt.

Over the next few years the face of the countryside will change forever as the corporates buy them up.

Expecting another huge inflation on food. Less local farmers, more imports, meaning more tax less supply. The EU will keep their food for themselves when there’s a shortage. We need local farmers.

£7 million spent on migrant hotels daily. That's just the hotel costs. We spend billions on it.

Inheritance tax is immoral and evil . Its tax opon tax upon tax and should be made unlawful like stealing.

The farms make so little return on their land that the tax essentially means it’ll break up farms because they will have to sell some land to pay the tax….

Then having a smaller farm makes it harder to make a profit. Many farmers are working hard because of the love for farming, they’re not all making mountains of cash and a lot of them are struggling to keep their farms going.

If this stays in place it’ll slowly erode the countries ability to feed itself.

And they can only hand down a measly 3 million pounds before becoming eligible for tax, how can the government be so cruel!!!

So farmers get up to 6 times the threshold of anyone else and at 20% half the rate of anyone else, with 10 years to pay it off interest free that nobody else gets, seems like a good deal.

Imagine if there was no tax on land and only a few people owned all the land in Britain and everybody else paid tax including all the feudal farmers.
Wouldn't it be great?
Well that was the way it was, not that long ago since 1066 until quite quite recently...

"Feudal agriculture refers to the agrarian system that existed in medieval Europe, characterized by a hierarchical structure where land was owned by lords and worked by peasants or serfs in exchange for protection and a place to live."

This Labour lot is just rocking the boat....What a shame!
I thought Brexit would have fixed all this sort of thing and we could get back to our Freedom.

There is a lot to chew on these comments.

What are they bleating about, they pay half the tax with 5x the allowance of the people who help them farm. They pay less inheritance tax than a farrier, less than a vet, less than an agricultural mechanic. This fake hard done to hero crap is total bollocks!

If the government says it only affects a few farms, it suggests that it's not worth doing for the upset it will cause.
Of course it could be a lie.

500 acres, the land must be worth a fortune, why shouldn't farmers pay the same tax on their assets as the rest of us? If they need to sell off land a small holding will allow many more to make smaller farms far more productive. It's about time these monster farms were broken up.

Angela Rayner faced jeers and boos in the House of Commons as she defended Labour’s proposed changes to agricultural inheritance tax during Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday, 20 November, yes she did, just before she announced a shed load of money being given to British farmers. So much money it was hard to comprehend. Who said GBNews wasn't impartial. Check it out, I didn't hear any complaints about that money. Apparently it was budgeted for by the last government but because they were preoccupied with switching leader they didn't release it. At last, some good news for farmers.

Why is inheritance tax even a thing. It should have nothing to do with the government.
