INFJs and the Dream Job Myth

INFJ personality types are idealist personality types, and this extends to all areas of life. When an INFJ personality type focuses on what type of career they would like to pursue, one of the first things they consider is how well a potential job lines up with their idealist values.

Many INFJ personality types (and INFP personality types) have an idealized vision in their mind of what their dream job would look like. This idealized vision is strongly tied to the value system of the INFJ or the INFP, and because this is so important to INFJs and INFPs, they often overlook red flags that the job may not actually be a good fit for them.

Workplaces that display elements of dysfunction don’t work for INFJ personality types and INFP personality types. It is very difficult for INFJs and INFPs to deal with narcissism, passive-aggressiveness, and cutthroat competition from coworkers. Sadly, this type of environment is very prevalent in large corporate companies.

It’s a common experience for an INFJ or INFP to be lured into a job based on the values put forth in the company’s mission statement, and then once they actually start working for the organization, discover a theme of underlying corruption, office politics, and game-playing. This is heartbreaking for INFJ personality types and INFP personality types, and it can cause long-term emotional damage to them.

One of the solutions to this ongoing problem for INFJs and INFPs is to decide to work for themselves as a solopreneur.

Showing up to work in a false way is completely unacceptable for an INFJ. Absolutely. Excellent insight.

Let your career goal be flexible- don’t focus on a fixed endpoint but focus on a continuous shift in the direction of financial, spiritual, emotional, social and career development.

Couldn't be happier being a truck driver. Alone most time. Socialize some. Learn all day whole time working

I now see each job as an opportunity to fulfill my life purposes and move on when finished rather than searching for a dream job.❤

Fact-checking the work culture before applying for a job is essential because employers are skillful at creating false images. I go through Glassdoor employee reviews to learn what's happening under the false facade.

Dream job: feeling fulfilled, high autonomy, the propensity to expand and be somewhat entrepreneurial with the potential to make a lot of money…not so we can show it off, but so that we can feel safe and plan our cozy future. The dream job is doing something that doesn’t feel so much like a 9-5 grind, but something you can do forever, while using our own creative spin and never really have to retire from. IMO

I'm in it for the paycheck now a days. My dream job was taken over with AI. I'm job hopping until early retirement. Most office environments are like cults, or you have to play "kiss the ring" all day.

You are spot on. I absolutely HATE in person work positions. I love working for myself. I just need to get more projects. I have been independent for a long time

After chasing down and getting what I thought was my dream job working on exotic cars, I changed careers and accidentally found more satisfaction than I ever thought I would in mechatronics. I've been doing it over 5 years now and it still feels like I'm being paid well for having tryluly relentless fun. It's also big enough of a company with enough turnover that I get the chance to delve into psychology and often use my intuitive people reading in a supervisory role.

It might not be what you think it is, but your dream job probably does exist.

INFJ here and I just left what I thought was my dream job. I lasted a year and a half and it ultimately came down to an ethical reason and it not aligning with my values. This video was perfect timing for me to see.

Worked the corporate world till 30 years old, then started my own company. PROBLEM was - I could hire anyone to work for me because I thought they should have the same work ethics that I naturally did.

Cannot agree more. 20 years into my career I’m still looking for that dream job. Thank you ❤❤❤❤

I might have figured this out unconsciously but one of the reasons I didn't pursue a non-tech field was the politics and the social maneuvering. At least in tech you have to demonstrate genuine ability and I'm all for meritocratic fairness. Currently am WFH and don't need to care about office drama. The work is tough but I code what needs to be done and close the laptop.

I am really enjoying your really insightful videos! I went self employed because I always felt trapped in employed jobs - I always felt like I wanted to escape! It felt amazing once I became a self employed handyman. However, I do suffer from anxiety when things don't go so well and ensuring I'm bringing in enough money per month. I am not great at valuing myself and charging accordingly. So sometimes I do think about going back to employment.

Thank you for this! I was really wondering why I dreaded being at the office five days out of the week and now I know why! I appreciate you 😊

Thank you 👍 Since I found out I'm an INJF a lot of things have been clearified for me, about myself. This video is absolutely describing whats going on in my head.. I've recently once again choosed to leave a job only after two months and finding out it was a crazy circus kind of place.. and now what to do....I totaly understand the idea about working by myself but it's a financially risky thing..so... trying to find a new employment but it has to be balanced, nice and polite coworkers, a variation of duties and most of all.. I'm working best on my own but at the same time I don't want to be all by myself..I like to have nice people around me but not interfering.... Looking very much forward to pension and to be free from employmentslavery....
Good luck to all INFJ out there! ❤

There are not many of those niche jobs that speak to INFJ's so when you see one jump first...bird in the hand! BUT keep eyes open and maybe have resume ready BUT thats just negativity!! Plow ahead, try to influence the company, advocate for the good and as you stay for years thinking you can handle it (as you are compromising your values, masking and swallowing frustration and anger) you start coming in late, second guessing your value, trying harder and then BURN OUT with some bad unconscious and or conscious behaviours becoming your new self! until whatever happens, happens.

thank you for speaking about those concerns, because it really is the resistance.
