I recommend to consider the effect of high income taxes and good wages onto the economy. The U.S. had that in the 40s until the 70s * (in 1944 94 % top income tax rate for more than 2, 7 million USD in todays ! money, it was still 90 % under JFK although with some loop holes and I think for a higher amount).
