I'd like to add as my personal number one, one of my favourite international movies starring a female lead in Yeong-ae Lee as Geum-ja Lee in Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. It depicts the vengeance seeking Geum-ja, a mother that was put in prison under false accusations taking away the ability to be with her child. When she is released from prison, she seeks to punish those who were responsible for the crime, thus removing her from her daughter.

A must watch for anyone that likes female leads!

SERIOUSLY? Furiosa a side character? The movie should have been called "Furiosa with special guest Mad Max in: Fury Road" She is the main character of the movie while Max is a grunting side character.

A relatively unknown movie that was really good was "The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio". Based on a true story, Julianne Moore plays the mother of a large family and the wife of an alcoholic. She basically has to support her family by winning poetry and jingle contests with her amazing writing talent. Sometimes strength is found on the inside, and the silent strength that Ms. Moore conveys in this movie is phenomenal. Definitely worth a watch!

Great list, however I think that Princess tiana should've at least been an honourable mention because she was the only Disney Princess who had an actual job and set high goals. She also didn't depend on marrying a Prince Charming for happiness like some of the other princesses. She focused on pursuing her fathers dream while making herself proud as well as her mother.

I don't think anyone can not like Mulan, a movie about men having to go to war and a girl whom tries to save her elderly father from that fate... if there was ever a strong female lead, it was one that stood up against social norms, saved her father, and also saved all of china in the process.
