My grand father was a tank commander in the Korean war. Won 2 bronze stars, 2 silver stars, and a purple heart. Qualified for the medal of honor but wasnt awarded it due to some lost paper work.

He was a war hero. But he never once spoke of the war except for 1 time. Once, when he was drunk, he stood on his wooden porch in the dead of winter. The snow is gently falling and he kept staring into the cold. He simply stood their and said.

"Korea gets mighty cold in the winter.... Mighty cold".

I heard all of this second hand from my mother, as the man passed before I was born. My mother said it wasnt until years later that she learned what he meant by that statement. He was in charge of a whole tank platoon and they were unprepared for the winter. He watched many of his men freeze to death in the cold moutains due to lack of proper winter gear.

She also said that even before the war he was one hard motherfucker. Hardest motherfucker she'd ever seen. And never drank. But after the war, he drank every day until his death in the 80s. Even though it wasn't until after his death that she learned what happened over there from his men, she knew this war broke her father, The hardest motherfucker she'd ever seen.

That's how terrible war can be. You can be the toughest person around and it'll still break you.

My grandfather was a French member of the Résistance, he survived for 2 times and he even escape himself from a german prison.
My other grandfather was a french who fought in the British army after the D-Day.
His sister was deported to Auschwitz.

I'm very proud for my ancestors.

I love nothing more than going to these sorts of videos and seeing people delicately pour out the past of their families in the most terrifying wars to ever stain humanity. Everyone, French, German, British, Russian, American, all of us, letting out our feelings and stories from our family histories, telling eachother in this tight knit but distant little community of people with a lot to say about war and nowhere to share it. You're all amazing, humanity needs more people like you.

This movie drives home the the sense of hopelessness every combat veteran feels at one time or another. If extremely unlucky, you feel that way all the time and even bring it home with you. Of course if you don't come home, it doesn't matter.

I still find myself back here. Ideals are peaceful, History is violent.

You are most welcome paul, he spoke highly of all the people he met in europe, and his love of french brandy lasted until the day he died. Happy christmas everyone x

Many lived and many died, but to some living is a fate worse than death, because they couldn't live with the horrors they had committed, the things they had seen, and the things they just wanted to forget. They started the war ready to fight, and left, wanting to let it all go, but they can't because it stays with a man until the day he dies. "The first is casualty of war is truth" Mike Owen, Hebden Bridge UK

They share a bond much more than an unbreakable friendship.

They share the bond of a family
