I have the original Insta360, and the best thing it does that I've found is what you are pointing out all around the 5:00 mark. Being able to just put it out or mount it, let it film, and then later edit your camera angles is pretty incredible, especially when it is used as a second camera (or third or fourth) when shooting something. Most of the truly gimmicky shots I find useless, but the nature of a camera that captures everything from its POV provides a lot of power in the editing process. I'm working on a mount for my kayak. If I ever do have an encounter out there, it would be awesome to be able to just reach out and start recording, then be able to enjoy the moment without thinking about the camera anymore. Then later I can edit it and have the best angle to show everything in frame .

I was snowboarding and holding my Insta360 One on a pole behind me and a guy comes chasing after me yelling, "Dude, dude, your camera, it's not pointed at anything!" I yelled back to him that it was a 360 camera and that it is pointed at EVERYTHING! What I love is when you post a video in 360 and watch it on an iPad or iPhone and then when you turn the device, the video looks in a different direction. I posted a couple 360 videos and didn't even know it did that when I posted them on my channel. I posted a 360 version of a long zipline and then an edited flat image of the same zip for comparison purposes. I said this in another comment but, I never thought I would love 360 so much.

8:48 The insta audio has a lot of data compression, making the high frequencies sound like 128kbps MP3.

The GoPro audio sounded much more natural and higher quality to me.

I'm a big GoPro fan-I think I have about 30 of them since they went digital and a couple years ago, I bought an Insta360 ONE. Where I used to go ziplining with 3 GoPros on me- helmet, stick, wrist, I just carry the ONE. ( I also have the ONE X and the Nano) I never thought I would love 360 so much. I have only posted a few videos in 360, ziplining, rafting, tours of Jamaican resorts, but I love it. I am about to buy the ONE R since it is on sale.

The image stability is great but the thing I like most is you can edit and export the footage then remove the key frames (pivot points) and make a completely different video from the same footage as many times as you need. After all the versions are exported you can slice them into a really cool movie.

Hang it under the drone and I think the stability and footage will be better. Just a little more wonky on the takeoff and landing. 😃

I literally have everything for video making that is handy (not professional) osmo pocket, osmo action, iphone 11 Pro max, osmo mobile, mavic mini etc, but this is next level. Turn it on, walk around, do the framing later. You can just DO stuff without thinking to much

I'm unimpressed with the video quality at 8:48. I know you were comparing audio at the time but it's like night and day comparing video with the gopro. Were the two cameras not setup with comparable video settings at the time?

I hear artifacts from the Insta. The 8 is much cleaner. The Insta sounds brighter, the 8 is a little muffled, but I think that’s their standard for reducing wind noise. That is one cool camera, thanks for the review!

2:56 can't unsee that mic windshield peacing out of the frame, not a care in the world.

And as an avid user of the predecessor, the Insta360 One X; I was tempted to upgrade to the One R, but it was a minimal upgrade for me so I have am still enjoying the One X, and am glad to see you're enjoying the 360 fad.

As for the mounting on a drone, Insta360 does have a drone kit for the One R that is sold separately which encases the drone so it doesn't appear in the final footage. This can lead to some crazy and creative shots that can only be captured using this system.

Checkout the mount made just for the Mavic, makes the drone disappear from the shot. One lens on each side, some cool footage can be had! Corridor Crew has a GREAT video on using the camera with drones to check out.

Nice review! One of the better uses I saw of 360 degree photography was done by the state of California during the reconstruction of the Oroville Dam spillway. They would fly a drone from the bottom to the top of the spillway and shoot it in 360; you could pan all around and take a look at any item you wanted while the drone flew along. Great stuff. I also think the GoPro audio was a bit better than the Insta360. I'm very curious as to the 1" mod upgrade does for the video quality.

Audio was about the same with Hero 8 but the picture quality was so much better with Hero 8 (8:48 start to Insta 360 One R vs.8:59 start of Hero 8). But I get the 360 is an awesome option for all the reasons you mention Russ. I am experimenting now with the Wiral Lite Cable cam because drones are not acceptable to use over people or where they are too load for venues like shooting a wedding, concert or party. The 360 One R on the cable cam with its digital stabilization would be good to try... Damn, I may have to buy one to a lot.... Just kidding . THanks for sharing and congrats on #3 learning how to ride on 2 wheels. It must have been a little nerve racking if he took a with the 360 spherical lenses is that they are vulnerable to damage because they by design have to protrude out and usually are in contact with ground with they fall.
