Insta360 ONE R: The Ultimate Modular Action Camera?

The new Insta360 ONE R is a modular action camera, with 5.7K 360 lens, 4K wide angle, and even a 1-inch 5.3K/30fps mod. Here's my review and first comparisons versus GoPro.

10:35 which little tripod is that? Seems to have a ball head or similar movement? The Rhode set-up is REALLY sweet!! Great to maintain audio and be able to walk around etc. Much more of a full bodied sound than onboard.

I think GoPro made a mistake by postponing their mod release until February. I was planning on buying the GoPro 8, but I just don't see a reason to pay extra for a tacky external selfie display mod, when the One R already comes with a reversible screen. Absolutely genius!

I've seen lots of 360 footage, but no ones done a 4k comparison with the gopro 8 and the osmo action. The insta 360 one r seems to crop the image similar to the osmo action in rocksteady and I'd like more footage to see if that's true. I think 50% of my usage would be the front facing 4k module with an external mic. Great video as ever Ben, thank you.

Around 6:30 do I understand correctly? Over WiFi you are editing footage that is still only on the One R, then you import the EDITED version into your phone? (Or actually it’s being exported to...social?) Do other 360 or action cams do this? What a neat feature! I like the idea of just importing what’s needed

Thank you Ben. Two or three different cameras on a project are indeed tricky especially regarding charging, but it also means: 1. Backup in case one breaks down, 2. Two or three different viewing angles, 3. Several opportunities to capture audio... just my two cents! ;)

8:54 The most lame backdrop is when people are just talking in their cars, but wow, this is so much more dynamic! I'm getting sold on 360! And thank you for covering the shortcomings at the end. I agree that they should've included a mounting option on the bottom. The One R is noticeably larger than the GoPro, so adding a cage will make it even bulkier. The bigger it gets, the more you lose the convenient form factor.

Got to say, I think this is pretty brilliant, in fact really brilliant idea. As you mentioned at the end, would be really cool if they just made new mods, new batteries, cores etc, and they all fit together like a puzzle, so you don't always need to replace the whole camera. Reducing electronic waste :3
Also depending of the use, but one really good thing is they made it smaller! For example this will be really good camera for skydiving compared to other 360 cameras.

You mentioned towards the end that the one x strips out and that is true. If you use it for action sports then it is possible to to strip it out more easily.

Hey Ben. Thanks for posting this comparison. FYI, in my comparison video, I found that One X was more detailed than One R. I notice that your One X had color plus effect applied. Can you compare your One R and One X shots both without color plus, and both using prores? Then could you let us know if you still find the One R to be more detailed than One X? Thanks in advance.

WOW! This is so much better than my 2 GoPros together!! All the incredible app editing features and the best part is connection and export! LOVED IT!!
