Basis Point Explained (aka “Bips”)

A basis point, sometimes called a "bip", equals one-hundredth of one percentage point, or 1/100 of 1%, or one percent of 1%.

1 bp = 0.01%
25 bps = 0.25%
150 bps = 1.50%

Basis points are used frequently in Finance to represent small fluctuations in interest rates, rates of return, etc.

What was wrong with percentages that we had to start using a term that needed to be converted back to a percentage. Boredom?

Thanks for explaining. Why don’t they just say it moved 0.25% instead of saying 25 basis points? General pubic understand percent more than “basis points.”
