South Florida PBS' Between The Covers invites you to participate in our virtual interview with David Heska Wanbli Weiden author of Winter Counts.

Winter Counts is a thriller set around South Dakota’s Rosebud Indian Reservation. The betrayal of Native Americans and the issue of native identity are the backbone of this crime novel.

David Heska Wanbli Weiden, an enrolled member of the Sicangu Lakota nation. His novel, Winter Counts, is a New York Times Book Review Editors’ choice and was named one of the Best Books of 2020 by Publishers Weekly.

I finished reading “Winter Counts” a few days ago and it has stayed with me. Not only is it a terrific mystery, but it also gives readers a glimpse into life on a Native reservation and some of the challenges that exist there, as well as the inequities in the criminal justice system. The characters are also real and relatable. Hands down, this is one of the best novels I’ve read this year. I’m eagerly looking forward to Mr. Weiden’s next Virgil Wounded Horse novel.

I read his book in less than a weeks time. I haven't been that engrossed in a book in a while & I'm so ecstatic to hear the story will continue.
