Powerful and uplifting, I can almost hear the chanting encouraging one to rise up and overcome that which lies before them.

'My child, you are the greatest of all the Seraphim. All that the illumination of Heaven shines on, glows from within your soul.'

The words echoed through Lutetia's mind.

The deep ranks of the Knightly Orders had failed to stem the dark. The remains of that defeat lay scattered across the blood soaked earth. Their final words, the oaths of the dead and the fallen lingered upon the air. A haunting chorus. Like the weeping of many angels. Lutetia heard it all. The regret, the sorrow, the sunken dejection of those oaths unfulfilled.

The army of the damned and the daemonic crept ever closer. Their senses spiked by the scent of fresh blood, yet to be spilled. Long black tongues licked needle-like teeth, tentacles writhed. Hellish eyes the color of fire with slits for pupils regarded the lone adversary stood before the gates of the bastion-city. She raised the Staff of Light to her brow and calmly breathed a prayer to ease the voices in her mind.

"Fear not, " She whispered to them. "I have overcome what you could not. Your duty is ended, be at peace my brothers and sisters."

The voices began to fade, and as she raised her eyes again to glare hatefully at the capering horde of monstrous beasts advancing on her city, the flickering ghosts of the slain passed into the next world. Their tiny soul-flares shining bright before disappearing forever.

She spoke.

She spoke loudly and clearly for all to hear.

"I am Lutetia!" She cried. "I am the greatest of the Seraphim. All that the illumination of Heaven shines upon, glows from within my soul!" She raised the staff aloft, aetheric wings spreading from her back. They seemed to cast a warm glow rather than a shadow. "I have overcome the death of my comrades. I have overcome the fear in my heart. I have overcome the world itself!"

She began to intone the Rite of Holy Brilliance, as she had been taught in the Convent. She would not falter. She would not fail. The daemons surged forward, hungering, their eager, slavering jaws wide to devour the flesh-feast. In the face of that black abyss, she closed her eyes.

A single, pure, clarion note sounded on the air.

With it came light, and fire.

And in a single bright pulse of Divine radiance, the horde of monsters was banished back to the hellscape from which it had crawled.

Lutetia dropped to her knees, exhausted as the glow faded, and nothing but dust swirling in the empty air remained before her.

"I will overcome all. For the Light, is with...me..." She breathed as her consciousness fled and she fell.
