Even though they are identical, I think Pixar made the smart move bringing the scene of the Toys crossing the street to when they reach Al’s Toy Barn. It showed that they are incredibly close to their destination and that was one final obstacle for them to overcome. In the original version, they could have easily found another way around the road or climbed along the telephone wires.

Toy story 2 before the stupid employee accidentally erased 90% of the movie

The old cut seems to have much flatter lighting which looks quite similar to Toy Story 1.

Buzz's last line in this scene is the cherry on the top. After all the chaos that has ensued, he says they're a whole lot closer to Woody just as the camera pans to Al's apartment building, hinting at the fact they were closer BEFORE crossing the road and causing so many accidents.

"Closer to woody" then shows where woody is in the opposite direction. One of those small details you might miss as a kid.

The new one makes more sense why they had to cross the road.

A lot of people are talking about the lighting being similar to Toy Story 1’s lighting style, and I can agree it is very similar; but I kind of prefer the lighting of the first one more as the brighter lighting style is more interesting and aesthetically pleasing to me.

But the fact Al’s Toy Barn was closer in the final product I would agree is better pacing wise and makes the toys feel less cowardly when talking about how they will cross the road.

Toy Story 2 - Crossing the Street (Original Version)

Buzz Lightyear: OK, we made a left at Dinoco, then proceeded 2.7 kilometers north.
Now, according to this, we should intersecting a road.

[A lot of cars came zooming past. One of them hit a can and it land on the pavement in front of the toys]

Buzz Lightyear: We'll have to cross.

Toys: What the.... What?!

Slinky Dog: I may not be a smart dog, but I know what roadkill is.

Mr. Potato Head: You're not turning me into a mashed potato.

Rex: Ah, well, we tried.
[He turns to leave but Buzz grab his tail to bring him back.]

Buzz Lightyear: There must be a safe way.

[He then saw something which gives him an idea.
A bunch of traffic cones are on the pavement]

Buzz Lightyear: Okay, here's our chance. Ready, set, go!

[The cones then move across the road.
Rex whimpers nervously in his cone.
The Cars come rolling towards the toys and Irelanders]

Buzz Lightyear: Drop!

[Everyone stop and dropped their cones.
A car swerved to avoid them and went into some spikes on a driveway, punctuating the tires, Another car crashes into it]

Buzz Lightyear: Go!

[They move on until Buzz heard the cars again]

Buzz Lightyear: Drop!

[Some of them drop except Hamm and Mr. Potato Head]

Buzz Lightyear: I said drop!

[They drop and cars swerved to avoid the cones, results in a crash and a wheel rolling]

Buzz Lightyear: Go!

[The toys walk on.
As Hamm mutters to himself, a monster truck came zooming over his cone, making it spin around for a sec before stopping.
Hamm shook himself and walked on. Buzz heard more cars coming]

Buzz Lightyear: Drop!

[They do so and a car swerved around to avoid it then a truck with a concrete pipe which braked, making it's trailer move around in a big U turn]

Buzz Lightyear: Go!

[The toys move on.
Then as the trailer leans, the chains holding the pipe breaks and it roll off the trailer and onto the road.
Mr Potato Head's shoe got stick on some gum.
Mr Potato Head stops and search for his shoe until he finally touch it.
As the pipe roll towards him, he strains to get his shoe free until he finally gets it free and ran to the other side just as the pipe rolled to the gum and got it stick to it's side.
The toys arrived on the other side of the road and put the cones down]

Mr. Potato Head: Ah, that went well.

Buzz Lightyear: Good job, troops. Excellent covert maneuvering.

[All the cars are all piled up and the pipe roll towards a telephone pole and knocked it to the road]

Considering how it’s the same sequence with the same animation, it’s surprising just how much better the new one is (goes to show small changes go a long way)

The original version looks like something out of the first Toy Story

Is it just me or does the original look more realistic than the new version

I like how they made the lighting softer and orange inside of the cones. The edgelight everyone has in the original version looks a little more dynamic, but doesn't really make any sense.

I like the film version of this scene better, as it makes more sense to have the Apartment and Al's Toy Barn right across from each other. The original just seems to almost be mostly them crossing the road from out of nowhere in the suburbs. And you probably wouldn't have known exactly where they were to head next after all that. So the film version shows more accuracy and progress on where they're headed.
Also, I recognize the music in the original version is from the Chase sequence in the original film.

1:52 Do you think that this scene was changed because of the power pole landing on the ground?

I'm glad they changed this like others mentioned, it feels like this would have just been a filler scene they would show when cutting away from the Woody sections. In the final film, it's progressing the Rescue Mission plot.

The original is definitely a lot like the one in the first one

I think i liked the original version because that version showed everything for example Buzz said the directions of Al's Toy Barn and it showed Mr. Potato Head in the cone and the pole that fell down was very different in the original version and the music was very different in the original version. The lighting in the original version reminds me of Toy Story 1. There were so many differences in the original version of this scene. So i have to say that i like the Original Version better than the New Version that they have now. :)

This Toy story 2 is not what we know, it's a clichéd story and also done without a soul.

But who saved Toy Story 2 that became what we know was John Leeseter and his team ❤
