Like pretty much all living things, plants are also naturally equipped with natural defense
mechanisms that help protect them from all the vicious animals out there that might want to eat
them. Besides the regular stinging spikes and thorns, certain plants are filled with deadly toxins
that can make us incredibly ill or even kill us if we unknowingly ingest them. And, depending on
where you live, some of these plants might even be growing in your own backyard, so it might
be a good idea to pay heed to what we have to say. Without further ado, here are the top 10
deadliest plants and flowers.

10) White Snakeroot
White snakeroots are a poisonous plant native to North America and can grow to around three
feet tall. The plant contains a chemical element known as tremetone. Consumption of high
amounts of white snakeroots can result in death especially of cattle. Interestingly the milk and
meat of a cow that has consumed white snakeroot also becomes contaminated with the
tremetone toxin. This poison can pass onto humans via consumption of contaminated meat or
milk. This type of poisoning in humans is known as milk sickness. This condition results in
vomiting, weakness, pain, and coma and can also cause death in some cases. Back in the 19 th
century more than thousands of people died of milk sickness.
9) Cicuta
The Cicuta plant is also known as water hemlock and is among one of the most toxic plants
that grows in North America. This plant grows up to a height of 2 to 2.5 meters and have small
umbrella shaped, green or white colored flowers. The plant also has a thick main stem and
contains incredibly toxic liquid. It is highly dangerous to humans and can affect their central
nervous almost immediately. Something you should know is that the Poison hemlock which is
also a member of the same Apiacea family can sometimes be confused with the water
hemlock. Both are poisonous but in their own way. Both their roots and seeds are also toxic
which mainly affect cattle and other animals that graze on them.
8) Aconite
This flowering plant grows in mountainous regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Aconite is also
known as monkshood, wolf’s bane and Leopard bane. Almost every single part of this plant
contains a poisonous alkaloid. In particular the roots and tubers are incredibly toxic in nature.
Ancient Greeks used to make use of the toxin to kill leopards and wolfs which is why it is also
called wolf’s bane. This plant can reach a height of up to 6 feet. Its large blue, purple and white
mixed flowers are incredibly pleasant to look at and they resemble monastic heads. An
accidental intake of aconite can result in burning, vomiting and diarrhea. It can also cause
variations in blood pressure, heart irregularities and can result in a coma.

7) Angel’s Trumpets
Angel’s trumpets are large shrubs that belong to the tropical regions of South America. This
plant gets its name from its large fragrant flowers. All parts of this plant are highly poisonous
containing tropane alkaloids. The highest concentration of the toxins is found within the seeds
and leaves of the angel’s trumpets. The trumpet-shaped flowers of this plant can grow up to 10
to 20 inches. The flowers have a strong pleasant fragrance and their color can vary from white,
yellow, orange and red.  The consumption of the leaves, seeds or stem of angel’s trumpets
can cause nausea, diarrhea, paralysis and hallucinations. An over consumption of the plant
can also result in death.
6) Jimsonweed
Jimsonweed is known by many names some of which are devil’s weed, hell’s bell and devil’s
trumpet and it grows abundantly across the United States, Canada and a handful of the
Caribbean Islands. This plant has the ability to alter the minds condition as it is a powerful
hallucinogen. But traces of poison can be found dispersed within the Jimsonweed, mostly
concentrated in the leaves and seeds. Jimsonweed plants grow up to a height of 3 to 5 feet
and its roots grow incredibly long. The leaves of this plant have a length of between 5 to 8
inches. Its cream or violet colored fragrant flowers also bloom throughout the summer season.
The measure of toxicity in a jimsonweed varies by the plant’s age, climate and the place it
belongs to. If you ever accidentally come in contact with it and happen to ingest it by sucking
its juice, eating the roots or leaves of Jimsonweed, your entire nervous system will be affected
along with your eyes, ears, throat and mouth. An overdose can also result in death.
