Founded in 1971, Apple Hill is a year-round nonprofit arts organization that exists to perform, teach, and broaden the appreciation of chamber music. It is stewarded by the organization's Executive Director, Javier Caballero, and the Artistic Directors and resident ensemble, the Apple Hill String Quartet. The quartet presents concerts and workshops throughout the world and, for three months of the summer, teaches and coaches chamber music to participants of all ages and levels at the Summer Chamber Music Workshop held at Apple Hill’s beautiful 100-acre campus in the Monadnock region of New Hampshire.

The organization’s innovative Playing for Peace program brings musicians with ethnic, cultural, religious, or political differences together in chamber groups. Over the span of 30 years, this program has grown to include many other communities, including those who are underrepresented in classical music, separated by racial or ethnic discord, or by differences of gender, orientation, ideology, religion, age, or playing level. This unique model enables participants to transcend national, cultural, and social barriers while participating in an exceptional educational program.
