Man Arrives On Mars & Discovers A Civilization At War

Decorated, former cavalryman John Carter is mysteriously transported to the planet of Barsoom. In trying to find his way back home, he meets a giant barbarian named Tars Tarkas and a runaway princess named Dejah Thoris. Carter quickly finds himself at the center of a war that would determine the planet's fate.

The John Carter stories were actually a source of inspiration for Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster’s Superman, along with Doc Savage and Philip Wyler’s novel Gladiator and the pulp story When Worlds Collide.

Underrated, although some potholes should have been fixed. Still it's not bad at all. Based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' story from 1917. Pretty sure we've all seen movies w bigger budget, less story and more marketing being overhyped by the masses. Too bad the studio's failure marketing it was a bigger news than the movie..

The main problem was that this movie had no target audience. Original story is much more mature and brutal and yet they decided to castrate it. Disney even hired a WallE/Finding Nemo director to direct it. Like, imagine if Disney suddenly wanted to make a story that has a maturity level of Games of Thrones and turn it into a family friendly experience. That's what happened to John Carter. Thus they created a movie that was too mild for older viewers and yet too serious for younger ones.


Also it had a problem with narration and pacing, many scenes were completely unnecessary and some were prolonged to the limits. In recap you can't feel it, but in reality 1/3rd of this movie was simply boring to watch. I have no idea how Stanton managed to make a story full of sci-fi+fantasy mashup an unenjoyable experience, even if it was toned down so much.
