Carbon Felt Blanket for Pots and Mugs

In this video I try out an idea I had to use carbon felt/fiber as a cover on a pot as it's boiling to protect it from acting as a heatsink in the winter. I'm not taking credit for "inventing" this but I do think this could be a good use for carbon felt/fiber.

One problem with using carbon felt on pots was how to attach it without making it permanent. One thing that looks like it might work are the "Hot Cooking Bands" I found at a le gourmet chef store. These bands are basically "rubber bands" made from silicon and are said to be able to withstand temperatures up 10 600°F or 350°C. I think that as long as the bands are not exposed to direct flames the should be able to stand up to the heat from an alcohol burner.

So here I am trying ColoradoCamper's Hybrid Side Burner Stove with large holes on the Stanley Camp Cook Pot,like I did in a previous lab, but using the carbon felt as a cover or blanket using the silicon bands to hold it on the pot.

Thank you ColoradoCamper,
and thank you for watching my video,
Hiram

I bought some of the same bands on clearance years ago to truss birds for roasting and never used them in the kitchen. Ran across them in a cabinet and started throwing them around stuff in various kits and bags for camping and bushcrafting and use them all the time now. I keep all the yellow ones around my Firebox X-case to hold it closed (makes it more visible too, now that the case is getting dark), so I always have 5 on me, no matter what. Semper Fi, buddy.

I occasionally buy roasted chickens hot at the grocery, and the legs are held by an elastic band of some sort. If I removed these instead of cutting them I could repurpose.

This is a cool idea! You could also "sew" the felt blanket in place with metal wire. As someone mentioned, this would be cool on the GSI Minimalist as you'd still have the insulation of a cozy but it would be fire-proof and could potentially speed up boil times.

The rubber bands are great, I've been using them for awhile. Heavy duty. Great for the camp fire. Keeps meat and anything else secure on a stick.

Carbon felt blankets would be handy for metal water bottles. They don't have handles and gloves accidentally get left at home sometimes.

CF might keep the heat in but I think the reflectix would be cheaper and stand up better to use. Good idea though to keep in mind. Thanks!

Chances are they are the same bands. Cool!

The first I ever saw it used was 2 years ago by Tzstove. That guy knows how to make stoves. IMHO

I check on Amazon for price. That's a great idea using CF on the GSI Minimalist.

Carbon Felt shrinks over time and can even get brittle and break rip...so just when you go to left your pot the Carbon Felt will rip...or can...

you could sew it together using kevlar thread as it's rated for 800 deg F before it starts decomposing,

Sir.... Thank you for the demo on those "hot Bands"!! Gotta get some!! I watched another of your vids and I'm pretty sure I heard you say there were 2 different sizes of Trangia stoves??? If true how do you distinguish between them when buyin them please?? Are they both still available? Which one fits most pot stands please?? Also where did you get the corragated aluminum for the ICAPS you made Sir??? Enjoy every minute of all you choose to share with us! Stay safe and keep 'em comin!!!

Or you can use a large bent wire paper clip.

An expensive idea. Use a piece of heavy wool.
