Global Interdependence: Is There a Spiritual Reason for It?

Global Interdependence: If we look at the increasingly globally interdependent world as a historian, we see the growing interconnection and we attribute it to different factors in society—economy, trade, communication, and so on. This is true on the surface, but in truth, there is a driving force behind the picture we see.

This force is inherent, embedded in human evolution, causing the increasing interconnection that we observe. This force also drives our indescribable, instinctive urge to grow, develop, and consume more of everything. But what we want and how much we want does not seem to have any justifiable cause, purpose, or need. We simply want more!

How did we get here? There is a growing conflict between two opposite trends. On one hand, we are driven to get more out of life, to conquer, to own, consume, and to fulfill ourselves endlessly through an instinctive egoistic drive that is very specific to humans. On the other hand, there is an inevitable interconnection and interdependence that is also growing.

We are presently at a point where these two have reached a point where the critical clash and conflict are culminating. We are not able to stop either trend, so are led to the gridlock that we can see, for example, in politics and in trying to solve global problems like the pandemic.

The more interdependent we become, we will see more and more that it is not enough to develop mechanical systems outside of ourselves, but instead, we will have to change our own mindset regarding this integration. We have to think about each other more to live beautifully together in this global interdependence.
