Why does France still own a small piece of land in South America, more than 6000 kilometers away from its mainland?

French Guiana is actually useful for the France and the ESA (Europe Space Agency) because the best place to launch rockets is near the equator because earth moves the fastest there, and French Guiana is very close to the equator but Europe is far.

For those who are wondering, the distance between French Guiana and France is 29, 527, 559 large-sized Taco Bell Doritos

The biggest thing is being able to launch spacecraft from there.

French Guyana is also used by the French foreign legion for jungle training. They have a base there and send legionnaires to do 2 year deployments in it. They have to undergo jungle training in the amazon. Saint Cyr military school for army officers also sends recruits there to be taught by the foreign legion

Honestly if I lived in French Guiana I would vote to stay part of france because I wouldn’t want French Guiana to end up like Suriname guyana or venezuela

Not only that, but there are more islands around this world with the exact position (part lf the mainland France) like Réunion islands and more

French Guiana is like the type of friend who you'd have lots of fun with initially and you don't talk to them for awhile until you talk to them again some long times later and they still remember you with respect as if the last time you both spoke to each other was the previous day.

The flight from Paris to Cayenne is also the longest direct flight you can take without a passport since it's French territory and EU citizens can also travel there visa free since it's inside the schengen area.

It's the same for almost all overseas territories.

Something people probably don’t know, but when we get the weather on TV in France, we not only get the weather of mainland France but we also get the weather of every Island and territory that is France but not Mainland.

Several ex-colonies are still part of France, including Martinique, Guadeloupe and Reunion. (The Netherlands also has some Caribbean territories.)
