Why is French Guiana Still a part of France?

Why does France still own a small piece of land in South America, more than 6000 kilometers away from its mainland?

French Guiana is actually useful for the France and the ESA (Europe Space Agency) because the best place to launch rockets is near the equator because earth moves the fastest there, and French Guiana is very close to the equator but Europe is far.

French Guyana is also used by the French foreign legion for jungle training. They have a base there and send legionnaires to do 2 year deployments in it. They have to undergo jungle training in the amazon. Saint Cyr military school for army officers also sends recruits there to be taught by the foreign legion
