The Great Britain men's hockey team had won a bronze medal at the Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Games and a silver medal at the World Championships in 1986. Still, it was not considered as strong as a candidate as the world champions Australia or the West Germans.

After a very close semi-final match against Australia, with a final 3x2 result for Team GB; the British had made it to the gold medal match. Up next was West Germany, a team that England had not been able to beat in around 30 years. Could they do it this time?

With a strong collective game, Team GB reached Olympic glory by sealing the victory at a 3x1 score. Team GB had just won their first ever Olympic gold medal in hockey.

I think i'm right in the fact that GB are the only Nation to have Won Gold Medals in Both Men's Field Hockey & Ice Hockey at the Summer & Winter Olympics Respectively!, The women have also won Gold in field Hockey at Summer Olympics.

Amazing performance from the Brits to upset both Australia and West Germany. Apparently, Imran Sherwani, who scored two of the goals, was a newsagent from Stoke.

Good to see the GB winning the gold.
Ever since the synthetic turf had replaced the normal playground the Asian domination had ended.
