This painting tutorial will take you through easy to follow, step-by-step instructions on how to paint this whimsical image of "Morning Hair, Morning Mug" with acrylic paint. You'll learn simple painting techniques that will help you to create this cute painting, possibly inspired by your daily life, with morning messy hair, a big mug filled with a warm cocoa, tea or coffee. Make it a self portrait if you'd like! You'll learn how to create dimension on the cup with shading and highlights, in the cup with steam billowing up from the drink, and on the wall with a subtle gradient. Create your own masterpiece using yourself as inspiration, or capture the essence of a morning jolt with the large orange ceramic drinking vessel. You'll learn to paint realistic looking texture in the hair, perfectly percolating coffee or tea and dreamy eyes that are so happy to have this beverage in front of them. Using only 3 brushes and 5 colors we'll create this conversational masterpiece with a warm morning wake up call with this oversized huge mug! So let's get painting and let's get sipping!

MATERIALS:
Canvas: 16x20 stretched primed canvas
Brushes: 1/2 flat bristle (large), #8 round (medium), #3 round (small)
Acrylic Paint: titanium white, mars black, burnt umber (brown), deep yellow, chrome orange
Other: #2 pencil, palette, cup of water for washing brushes, paper towel for drying brushes

STEPS:
1. #2 pencil - Draw outline for cup, saucer and head
2. 1/2 inch bristle brush - Paint the wall/background with white, yellow and brown
3. 1/2 inch bristle brush - Paint basecoat of liquid with brown and black
4. 1/2 inch bristle brush - Paint basecoat for mug and saucer with orange
5. #8 round brush - Paint the face skin with orange, brown and white (skin color)
6. 1/2 inch bristle brush - Paint shadow on cup and saucer with brown, black and orange
7. #8 round brush - Paint 1st layer of facial features with brown and white
8. #8 round brush - Paint 1st layer of hair with brown and black
9. 1/2 inch bristle brush - Paint highlight on mug and saucer with white, yellow and orange
10. #3 round brush - Finish hairy things with black, white, yellow and brown
11. #3 round brush - Paint 1st layer of fingers with skin color
12. #3 round brush - Add shadow to face with brown and white
13. #3 round brush - Finish liquid with black and brown
14. #3 round brush - Paint mug handle with black, brown, orange, yellow and white
15. #3 round brush - Finish fingers with white, brown and skin color
16. #8 round brush - Paint steam from beverage with white
17. #3 round brush - Sign with black

Just did it, made the hair, mug, and wall my own colors. I did a pretty shoddy job, but it's not meant for a fine art museum! LOL Love it.

Did this, as it looks like me. Did covid grey grow out hair 😂. Moved the handle to side, and hooked fingers through the handle. Love it very whimsical. Thanks Michelle looking forward to painting with you all winter since we can’t travel.

Just seen today, and so funny to this morning I have out my giant coffee mug, I think it holds either 4 or 5 cups and it has the following quote on it:

This is adorable! I want to make this for me, with pink curlers in my hair and one chunk sticking straight out (because there's always one curler that doesn't quite survive the night), pink nails, and cocoa with marshmallows.
