I picked one up as a air travel companion. Its perfect for the plane and does not take up much room. Very close to your use case, Its useful for movies, reading, games, maps, social, messaging (Whatsapp, FB messenger). I am still going through the process of the ATT unlock. My hope is that after I have it unlocked ill be able to use an eSIM with it and by data as needed when traveling.

I'm considering selling my Duo 2 and picking up a first gen Duo when I get the Pixel Fold. Keep it as a backup if the screen breaks on the Fold and use it as an ebook reader.

I only get 3GB a month in hotspot, how do you not blow through a limited hotspot plan in a few days streaming music and video?

Man, I know I shouldn't say it's a small world (when in fact it is a very large world), but you came up in my recommended since I've recently been watching videos on how Windows10x works on the Duo now. More than just seeing a fellow Duo enthusiast, I was elated to see someone else who loves tech, plays disc golf, and is religious! I thought I was one of the only ones, haha.

What are your thoughts on modding your Duo to dual-boot into Windows 11/10x? Have you tried using the Duo in that capacity?

I've never once put a SIM card in my OG Duo. Never used it as a phone and never will. To me it's an e-reader/multipurpose note-taking LTE tablet...
