You can have somewhat better accommodation cheaper if you are willing to walk a little. I got a fantastic Airbnb recently in Porto, which is super touristic at a great price as I was 30 minutes walk from the centre. We left in the morning and only returned to change before going out for the evening and then again for bed.
Don't buy tourist crap and be careful to check prices at bars and menus before buying to avoid tourist scam places. You can obviously also check them online first and book even before going on weekend city-breaks, if you feel like it.
I get that Americans don't go on weekend city-breaks in Europe but we Europeans do.
