That interview at the end was a miracle of doublespeak and unearned grievance even for the CCP.

The guy in interview lied shamelessly. He said in 2001 two fighter jets collided. The truth is:
China side was a fighter jet. US side was a propeller plane, Navy EP-3E ARIES II signals intelligence aircraft. There's no way a propeller plane can run into a jet at will. What happened was China fighter jet cut through the path of the propeller plane as a taunt. But the pilot miscalculated and killed himself.

Now if someone can make a lie like this, what credibility can we assign to the words he said?

China's behavior reminds me of the song "Charlie Brown, he's a clown" which describes a boy who misbehaves in school. When punished, he says "Why is everybody always picking on me ?"

The 2001 collision was not between fighter jets: the 2001 collision was between a very nimble Chinese fighter jet and a American EP-3E, which is a large prop plane best decribed as a 'cargo craft with a bunch of radios'.

The CCP perceives US attempts to de-escalate conflict in the South China Sea as a signal of weakness and irresolution. So they push harder.

They are trying to convince themselves that the US is afraid of war and will back down.

That is a strategic miscalculation of epic proportions.
