Treating Colic With Electrolytes

TUESDAY TRIVIA ANSWER: Why would a veterinarian use an electrolyte solution to tube a horse that is suffering from colic? Because, it draws water into the G.I. tract. Water helps to break down fecal matter. Oil is used to lubricate matter lodged in the G.I. tract, but it does not break down fecal matter. Depending on the colic case, your doctor may tube with mineral oil, electrolytes, or Epsom salt.

Colic is a generic term for stomach pain in horses. It should always have a vet called as soon as there is even the slightest suspicion. Colic is easier to treat if spotted early. Every horse owner knows how their horse normally behaves. But subtle signs such as:
. Inappetence(not wanting to eat).
. Less poop than normal
. Lifting tail and straining, but nothing coming out
. Restlessness
. Lethargy
. Their heartbeat, breathing, temperature changes.
ANY ONE OF THE ABOVE SIGNS, CALL THE VET.Source: British Horse Society REACT to Colic campaign.
