Sound travels faster in water than in air primarily due to differences in the medium's density and elasticity.

1. **Density and Elasticity**: Water molecules are more tightly packed compared to air molecules. This higher density means that the molecules are closer together, allowing sound waves to be transmitted more quickly. Additionally, water is more elastic than air, meaning it can return to its original shape more readily after being disturbed, which also aids in faster sound transmission.

2. **Molecular Structure**: In water, the hydrogen bonds between water molecules allow sound waves to pass more efficiently. In contrast, air, being a mixture of gases with larger intermolecular spaces, does not support sound transmission as effectively.

3. **Speed of Sound**: The speed of sound in air at room temperature (20°C) is approximately 343 meters per second, whereas in water, it is about 1, 480 meters per second. This significant difference is due to the factors mentioned above.

Overall, the closer molecular arrangement and greater elasticity in water facilitate faster propagation of sound waves compared to air.

I'm a grade9 student and this helped understand sound energy even more, thank :)
