John Ross was born in Newcastle-upon.Tyne; he studied music under a Mr. Hawdon. In 1783, he was given a position as organist at Saint Paul’s Chapel in Aberdeen. He seems to have lived in that city until his death in 1837. Ross wrote sets of variations for the keyboard, based on popular tunes of the time. This set, which has as its theme the well-known Scottish tune “Auld Lang Syne”, was written for piano or harp, but is perfectly suitable for the harpsichord as well. Happy New Year to one and all!

Wow, thank you for posting this piece! I found the score yesterday and practice it on piano in the moment. There are only old scores available. I wonder why nobody played this great variations before!
