GoPro Hero 10 Overheating Test vs. Hero 9 Black

So it has already become apparent that the GoPro Hero 10 Black has some severe overheating issues most likely due to the new GP2 chip causing more internal heat. In this video, I am doing an overheating test comparison between the GoPro Hero 10 and the GoPro Hero 9 to see which overheats first when recording in the highest resolution as well as in 4K.

I fly Fpv so having it strapped to a racing drone it has constant massive amounts of air flowing through it at all times, I’ll be picking one up tomorrow pretty pumped about it

Hello, if the Hero 10 GoPro is running in webcam mode for streaming versus recording, do you anticipate that there would be still be an overheating concern?

My go pro is underwater 95% of the time so no overheating for me. Definitely would like to see what DJI will do then I can make a decision.

This is good information to know before purchasing or upgrading to the Hero 10. I haven't seen any overheating issues with my Hero 9. But I rarely use it in hot and sunny conditions for extended periods of time. Great video Shawn, thanks for sharing.

Definitely wait for the DJI Action 2. This is not the first video that has overheating issues with this product.

Just an idea. To try to determine if it's the battery or the new GP2 overheating, could you connect a power bank to it and remove the battery, then test it to see if it still overheats?

RIP Well here goes all my hopes of the GP2 Processor ;( DJI Action 2 where are you???

I use mine to record hikes and kayak trips. I normally keep mine set for 1 minute record time. And even then I try to stop it before the minute, just so I'll have less video to review to make my movies. So the overheating shouldn't be a big issue for me. What has been a BIG issue was the pain in the rear end touch screen on the 9. Hero 10 should arrive Monday.. looking forward to a functional touch screen.

Is the camera heating the battery, or is the battery getting hot by itself? I wonder if using an external battery would make it record longer. I use a GoPro 9 to record my activities, and it will overheat outdoors in the sun. It's very annoying. I imagine the 10 would be completely unusable. GoPro tried to tell me to use a lower resolution but if you look in the reviews, people still experience overheating at lower resolutions. I'm gonna try mounting mine in an aluminum case. If the mount was aluminum, that would help too because those metal tabs get scorching hot. GoPro really needs to design it to operate continuously at full resolution in direct sunlight at 100 degrees minimum. It's unbelievable they try to tell us that most people use it to make short videos. Yeah, the edited video might be short after editing but you gotta run it continuously to capture the footage to edit, and I record for hours continuously.

Shouldn't the Hero 10 be an improvement over the Hero 9? Doesn't seem like it.

Please check what is the shutdown time for the GoPro hero 10 when filming at 1080p, 60fps (something more reasonable - even though the camera can film at 5k, I don't think I'll be using that resolution for my needs, not even YT can run it)

The first man walked on the moon over 50 years ago. At the price points for GoPro cameras, why are we forced to even have a conversation about OVERHEATING??? That’s just insane. Having a conversation as to the overheating of my iPhone while filming a video in my driveway or at the pool or beach seems more logical because it’s a PHONE not a camera. The GoPro is a camera and shouldn’t be overheating at all. I am so glad I didn’t buy one of these! I would have been very disappointed and frustrated with such an expensive piece of technology that overheats.

Since GoPro keeps promoting their Media Mod, I really wonder if the GP10 heats up even faster when used with it.

It's the battery that's the overheating problem. I've removed the battery on my GP10 and used my media mod to power via USB powerbank. No overheating, no memory failure. This may not be an ideal solution. But if you need to record at 5.3k for a prolonged time then remove the battery and power via USB.

I can record on my hero 9 for 2, 29h (!)
Not sure if its because I live in sweden and its colder here,
or maybe I use faster memory card? (its not even that fast, its a samsung EVO plus 256gb).
I always have voice, wifi, gps turned off.

Good information, thank you. Two questions, how long does it take for the 10 to cool down enough to use again after over heating. And do we know yet if this is the new normal for the 10? Cheers, Robert

You should've done another test with a fan blowing on them to simulate wind, and then another 2 tests in direct sunlight with and without fan
