How does this song have so few likes? Surely, more than 258 people have lost a love they can't get get over.
Thank you, Mr Gorka. I've listened to this song for almost 40 years, and you won't believe it? I found my "one that got away" again. Now we are engaged to be married!

I've loved John's music since 2001. He doesn't get near enough credit for his musical genius. An excellent lyricist and that voice! I've had a few interactions with him and he's a wonderful person

John's the best, always was, always will be. Beautiful lyrics, delicate guitar accompaniment.

Had the privilege of hearing John live a few months back. His beautiful voice so matches his lyrics, deep, lovely, and hauntingly unforgettable! Looking forward to seeing him perform again this summer.

love love love John Gorka. a true musician with songs worth hearing. he needs to teach so-called musicians of today how to write lyrics.

I recently went to the funeral of my "one that got away". It's been many years since we were together, but the sadness was like we were lovers just yesterday. I came home and listened to this and cried, but strangely it was comforting to hear

I get it, my wife of 28 years died on June 4, 2012 and here I am 10 months later still trying to work it out all out in my head. I suspect that there are no answers just time, slow time, and healing.

I was first turned on to this song by the woman I was dating. She had no idea it stirred in me memories over my "one who got away". Well, that relationship ended long ago, but surprise, I reconnected with the one who got away after 35 years. Now I play this song for her and tell her how I always knew I'd see her again, but could never dream we would fall in love again!!! Almost six years together now, and the love grows every day!

The female singing harmony is Shawn Colvin.  This song is one of my faves - so achingly beautiful :-)

I just found this song and it has to be put in with my poorly sung collection. Music is essential for sharing emotions.

This sad and beautiful song goes out to another sad beauty, my late first wife Jodie, murdered---stabbed 40 times, throat slashed, dumped in a ditch to die, alone---20 years ago, 03.20.97. That's the only way she would have ever got away from me. She never got to know Gorka's music, but she would have loved him for it. RIP JCM, see you soon.

Je me demande pourquoi ce type n'est pas plus connu?

JOHN GORKA
The One That Got Away Lyrics

I grew up beneath the trees
Not far from the refineries
Aimed at the sky like smoking guns
I learned to walk, I learned to run away

In tracing back our history
It's a wonder how we came to be
A love driven through a dozen states
With your technique for keeping me awake

The day we met is still a blur
Though I remember just how nice you were
And what you wore in Central Park
And how you left before the darkness fell

(Chorus)

(Now) I cry over these strings
This sentimental case of things
Though I'm better with each passing day
I guess you'll be the one that got away

'Cause everyone has one of those
You wear them like you wear your clothes
Except they don't come off at night
They are the space you hold up to the light

And somewhere along the line
You'll turn into a friend of mine
Who knows of my unspoken cares
Amid the aftermath of love affairs

(Still...) I cry over these strings
This sentimental case of things
Though I'm better with each passing day
I guess you'll be the one that got away

Now I stand beneath these trees
Not far from the refineries
Aimed at the sky like a smoking gun
I'll learn to walk, I'll learn to run again
