I Love Melvin (1953) #WarnerArchive #WarnerBros #ILoveMelvin

Charming and witty musical reunites Singin’ in the Rain’s Debbie Reynolds and Donald O’Connor in the tale of a go-fer’s quixotic quest to get his lady love plastered on the cover of Look magazine. Melvin Hoover (O’Connor) is a bumbler (except when he’s dancing on skates), a workaday schlep for Look magazine in love with Broadway chorine Judy LeRoy (Reynolds). Melvin convinces Judy he can send her star aloft by putting her on the cover of Look, due to his photog credentials.

Directed By Don Weis
Starring Donald O'Connor, Debbie Reynolds, Una Merkel

Stars in 50s were so great. They can sing. They can dance. They can act. And they were so beautiful and gorgeous.

We need to bring back this fashion! I want elegance and class to be trendy again.

I’m glad so many of you agree!

I love the chemistry between Debbie and Donald. They genuinely look like they’re having fun together, no just acting it.

I love Donald O'Connor because he embodies positive energy, talent and beauty. Debbie Reynolds is wonderful too. The music is nice, it makes me happy and i want to dance when i hear this song. However i'm french and i never succeed in finding the original movie with french subtitles :( because even if it is not the better movie ever it seems very nice!

I wish channels would include Donald's name in the titles like they do Gene, Fred and Frank. He's a fantastic actor, singer and stepper!

I always thought she had more chemistry with O'Connor than with Kelly in Singing In The Rain.

Not many people can act, sing, dance and be a deft comedian with equal skill. I think Danny Kaye and Donald O’Connor were the only two that could do it ALL convincingly.

Debbie was a terrific dancer. Well into her forties she was excellent in What's the matter with Helen dancing the tango and as a dance instructor. A woman of many talents. She is well missed.

What a fantastic number with two great performers! Donald O'Connor performed onstage with his family in Vaudeville from a very early age and was a seasoned pro for decades by the time he performed here in "I Love Melvin." This was just a year after he danced formidably with Gene Kelly in "Singin' in the Rain" and after a decade dancing for other studios like Universal during the 1940s. Debbie Reynolds represents a fantastic closing chapter to the Golden Age of Hollywood and its musicals. From her origins as a show business ingenue in 1950, she successfully transitioned from the Silver Screen to television in the 1960s. Throughout the challenges of her personal life, she was the consummate professional throughout and carried the utmost stoicism. She always remained relevant and contemporary with a following that includes her original fan base from "Singin' in the Rain" and "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" all the way up to Millennials with roles in "Mother, " "Will and Grace, " and "Behind the Candelabra." She also was one of Classic Hollywood's greatest ambassadors in preserving its legacy with an enormous collection of memorabilia that would have otherwise been lost. While her passing and that of her daughter, the great Carrie Fisher, leave us culturally diminished, they leave a wonderful legacy, including this wonderful number.

i'm used to see Debbie in 1920's style in *Singin' in the Rain* so i'm not used to her in this 1950'S getup.

Mr O'Connor - what a star. Miss Reynolds - what a gorgeous lady

It’s positively heartwarming that Debbie went from crying from all the dancing she had to learn in singing in the rain to having really great form and talent here. Obviously being a gymnast helped but still. Maybe we should all take a Gene Kellyesque bootcamp.
