It was a tricky question; How would Swedish duo Vintersorg continue after 2014`s intruiging Naturbål? Shunning repitition, vocalist and mastermind Andreas „Vintersorg“ Hedlund did the unthinkable and composed a sequel to his groundbreaking 1998 album with Till Fjälls del II! This means no scientific lyrical concept, no progressive trickery, but a heartfelt return to snowcapped mountains, pure nature-inspired mysticism, Nordic folklore and black metal with a captivating epic streak. Vintersorg share a vision of equally harsh and melodic soundscapes that melt the raging extremes of the late 90s with the focus of 2016. To the mountains…

Ahhh, I love the sound of metal in the morning.

A rough translation for all my english speaking friends. Though I have to say it's difficult to capture the feel of Vintersorg. Among other things many geological terms are specific for this particular landscape and the language at many times feels old and majestic in a way that's hard to convey in a direct translation. I've taken some poetic license, but this is pretty close:

Farewell pine and deciduous forest
That along the border stand imposing
Here a moraine formation points the way to the breeze
Layers of gravel like subjects of the cliff
Have since ancient times from bare mountains travelled with the ice

The waterfall - the jaws of the ancient fortress fizzes
And spits out its forthbreaking river
By a high plateu where lynxes coyly hiss
And trace fossils have been washed by the mountains blood

In darkness the mighty wall of the mountain stands
Where storms sing peevishly
The stretching glaciers wide sculpture
Shaped by the mercilessness of time

Like a murky army of titans
That give shadow to valleys of sharp contour
Giants that lead the way for each traveller

Be greeted! The lichen that show the depths
For eternal snow, like a polar dream
The full moon sprinkles its garb
Over the thousand-meter-depths
Wild predators pull forth shadows
In infinite stream

The bare mountains vibrate
And are grinded in their bodies
By icy rivers wearing (them) to skin-soft stone
Clothed by shrubs that are weaved against gnarly tops

Now I find peace to think and live
In the entrance of the delta

You know even though his vocals aren't his classic deep style that was on the first Till Fjalls, I have to say they are even more passionate and heartfelt here than they used to be. I get shivers all over as soon as the first line starts. That level of pure passion for the north is how you know you've come across another Vintersorg masterpiece.

This year really seems to be the year of returning to form for a lot of these long standing artists. That has been going for both the more mainstream guys and underground. I'm really enjoying it. This sounds really promising. It really has that late nineties/early two thousands feel.
