What camera should you buy? Leica M11 or Leica Q3? Here I cover both cameras for you

This video is a Leica M11 vs Leica Q3 comparison review. I compare the differences between the new 60MP Leica Q3 and the existing 60MP Leica M11 camera in 2023. Photos are edited with MrLeica Leica Q3 presets and Leica M11 presets for Lightroom.

A big advantage of the Q cameras for me is the weather sealing. I do a lot of outdoor photography, often in terrible weather. Weather sealing is important for shooting in bad weather conditions.

This is the typical sensible, well-balanced Matt review. One thought: after giving us 7 reasons why you might want to buy each camera, it would have been interesting to hear, say, four (or more or fewer) reasons why you should NOT want to buy each camera... "Things I Hate Most about Using the M" or "Things I Hate Most about Using the Q."

Thx for another great to the point review. I considered the Q3 recently after using M262 for years. The main reason being more precise framing when I need it. Especially the tilt screen helps reduce mis-framed shots dramatically. I'm not tall enough to do top down shots and sometimes I just can not get down on the floor.

I’m fortunate enough to have acquired both a Q2 and M10 (both used). I really enjoyed your breakdown/analysis, filled with specifics and reminders of the obvious. I’ve been improving with my M10 manual/rangefinder by just slowing down and thinking. Thanks for your posts. They’re great!

Succinct, erudite and knowledgeable, as usual. You are The Chieftain o' the Camera Gurus. Thanks, Matt.

I've got both the M11 and Q2 (not 3) for two very different reasons. M11 is for me when I want to take photos and go out and be purposeful. Q2 is for quick shots in a more casual environment.I really enjoy the experience of the M11 for its own reasons. You're right though the Q is definitely a gateway into the M or SL system.

I've owned many Leica bodies over the years (M10-P, M10-R, M11, M11-P, SL2, SL2-S, SL3, Q2, Q2M, Q3). Currently, I use the Q3, which I find offers the best balance between the M series' incomparable experience and the SL3's AF. As a serious musician with a busy gigging schedule, my music gear expenses impact my photography budget. I loved my M11 but had to sell it due to higher music-related expenses. (I refuse to put things on credit.) But I plan on getting another M system when the time is right.

I ordered Q3 because of Autofocus and image stabilization- at 60mp I think image stabilization will be very helpful. For everything else I still have my D800 with ton of lenses.

Look forward to your evaluation of the three Qs. Curious how that “old” 28 mm lens can perform with the 24, 47, and 60 Megapixel sensors.

i have just got the Q3 purely as a 1 lens travel camera

I owned the Canon R5, Fuji X100V, and Leica M11. Sold the R5 and X100V and purchased the Q3. I still have about 10K of RF lenses to get rid of but I'm old and retired and decided that the M11 was my sports car and when I want to go out and have fun I grab that with my four lenses. I grab the Q3 for just about everything else and I'm going to be shooting landscapes in the fall and I love that the Q3 is weatherproof to some degree.

Saying that the Q3 suits those who have no idea what f-stops or ISO means, fells kinda insulting. Pretty much everyone spending $6000 on a camera will have significant experience with photography - you probably wouldn't even know the brand Leica unless you're a photographer (or hunter).

There's so many other ways of saying that a camera is easy to use, it was completely unnecessary to choose an insulting way.

Thanks for another great video, Matt! My biggest issue with the Q3 is that the screen only tilts one way. What about when we get older and we want to take lower angle portrait shots! ;-)

Great video as always Matt, thanks for all the work you put in!
I managed to get a Q3 from Leica's website! But I also was on the list for a dealer and that came through as well if anyone is still on a waitlist I'd be happy to pass mine on!

Another excellent video, Matt. Thanks. I gave up my RF Leicas a few years ago because of aging eyes that most often do best with autofocus. Had a Q and CL along with Nikon Z gear. Loved all, but now shoot only with my dynamic THREE: SL2, Q3, and Q2 Monochrom. I'm done!

Hi Matt
I’ve actually come across numerous M10 & M11 photographers who went the other way. They were so used to auto focus they found the rangefinders too much hassle
Also, I traded a Nikon Z9 with 100-400 zoom for a rangefinder, now I’m unable to take sports and action photos and I have to buy all the same gear again
All the very best

i use the Q2 along with an M10r and a 50. sometimes just the M with 35. best of both worlds

Great video Matt! I own the SL2-S and I love it because it is half way between M11 and Q3. I tested the M11 and Q3 and I felt in love with the first one... but for my "strong" travel photography probably is better using SL2-S (more versatile) even if I usually use it with M lenses.
Unfortunately I can't afford 2 Leica cameras 😅

Great video 👍 is it possible to shoot a couple dancing at the 1st dance on a dance floor in low light using manual focus on an m11 ? I’m interested in the leica but unsure if it’s possible to use it at weddings
