dust storm on mars

One of the most terrifying phenomena in the solar system is the dust storms on Mars. The thin atmosphere and dusty terrain of Mars cause these enormous storms. Dust is picked up and carried high into the sky by strong winds as the air becomes warmer due to sunlight. Unfathomably high storm surges have the ability to cover the entire planet for weeks or months at a time! Their power can be so great that it can produce lightning! Sparks can be produced by the static electricity caused by the swirling dust, though they are not as frequent as on Earth. The Opportunity Rover's demise was one remarkable event associated with the Martian dust storms. Opportunity's solar panels were unable to receive sunlight in 2018 due to a massive dust storm that covered the planet. After a 15-year mission, attempts to establish communication with the rover were unsuccessful. Future Mars astronauts' greatest challenge will be to survive these dust storms.
