Wall Insulation - What R-Value Should I Install?

The only time to install wall insulation is during a new build or renovation, so do don’t get a second chance when choosing the right R-value for your home.

Decrease the demand to constantly use heating and cooling units by insulating both your external and internal walls. Internal wall insulation can reduce heat transfer between rooms in your home, to create temperature zones which allow you to heat individual rooms instead of the whole house. There are also acoustic benefits to wall insulation for both the external and internal wall. Noises outside your home such as traffic and aircraft, and noise inside your home like music and television can be reduced by up to 75%. We recommend installing a minimum of R2.5 wall insulation in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide, and in Brisbane, Perth and northern New South Wales we recommend a minimum of R2.0 insulation.

This must be a different measurement between Australia and the United States. Your R-2.7 is R-13 in the U.S. That's not enough wall insulation for summertime heat. Closed-cell foam insulation will double the R-value, air seal the building, and waterproof at the same time. Now your problem is heat transfer through the studs. Add one-inch Celotex insulation on the inside before the 5/8" gypsum board. That will give you a decent wall. East and west walls get considerably more heat gain from morning and evening sunshine. There should be an additional heat barrier reflecting infrared on these walls.

Good question, Outback Australia during the 6 hotter than hell summer months, how about R7.0 ceiling and walls.
