How To Watch The Geminid Meteor Shower Tonight?

It's December, and it's time to watch the best meteor shower of the year - the Geminid meteor shower. It is one of the three prominent meteor showers of the year, among Perseids and Quadrantids. They take place between Dec 6 -19 every year, peaking on Dec 13-14. Every meteor shower has a dedicated point in the sky called the radiant. All the meteors appear to originate from it. The radiant of Geminids lies in Gemini.

A meteor shower produces its best displays when its radiant is well up in the sky. The radiant of Geminids will reach the highest point in the sky by 2 am local time. You can start watching the shower a little before midnight to catch the earthgrazers.

Earthgrazers are long, slow, colorful meteors traveling horizontally to the sky.
You don't have to stare at Gemini. The meteors can appear anywhere in the sky. All of them will typically be moving away from the constellation of Gemini. The Geminids are particularly noted for their colors compared to the other meteor showers. 5% white, 26% yellow, and the remaining 9% are blue, red, and green. At its peak, it's possible to see up to 150 meteors per hour under ideal conditions. You don't need any telescope to watch the shower. Just find a dark place away from city lights.

Thank for the reminder! I am lucky I live in a place where there is not a lot of light pollution. So, at night you can sometimes observe the Northern Lights. It's probably been 18 years now; there was one year a few of us were drinking beers and watching the light show and we happened to be in this Meteor Shower's window. You get some really beautiful colors and streaks across the sky. It is like fishing, you do need patience. And if you blink you might miss it since they happen so fast. But it's exciting to watch once you see your first one fall through the sky.

I’m anxiously waiting for the peak night for this one. We’ll be getting close to a full moon so hopefully everything will be perfect.

back in November of 1997 I guess, I witnessed a spectacular display of showers which I later knew as the Leonids. It was mind boggling. It was like War of the Worlds scene. The whole sky was litterally raining streaks of light for hours. it was enchanting...

Wow, Earthgrazers? Don't think I've ever seen one? Let's pray the sky is cloud free, and not too much light pollution!

Saw this last night after work. It was beautiful. It was hard with the gibbous moon brightly shining but it wasn't Impossible. I stayed for 20-30 min. Was tired and drove home.

Thanks for the video! When you say that the peak is on Dec 13-14, does that mean that (theoretically of course) Monday 2am and Tuesday 2am will have an equivalent number of meteors?

My car broke down one December and I was able to watch the Geminids shower while waiting to be rescued.

just saw one in western MA to the east when taking out the trash at 2:15 AM EST; 12/14/2021. It startled me because I've always seen them travel from side to side looking like needles and hissing but this was straight down and was surprisingly large and silent.
