Rivers and seas would have been my first thought for where human settlements started (plentiful supply of water). Then again, forests supply firewood and building material, so maybe he's right?

Dunno, just seems an odd thing to suggest we 'belong' to forest edges. What natural resource is _your_ town/city located near, people? I'd be interested to hear.
