I’m so grateful my grandma let me cook with her from a young age (4+). At that age I wasn’t making a mess out of her kitchen and I could start to “help”. She didn’t give me a knife or any sharp objects until I was like 8 but she would make me wash the vegetables or make me whisk a bowl of egg whites.
She also taught me to wash dishes and clothes by hand even when I needed a step stool to reach the basin. At 9 she would make me peel vegetables and say “if you don’t work you don’t eat” in a caring yet firm tone. Since she was poor she would make simple dishes an adventure and reward me with homemade popcorn (always a disaster) once a month. She passed when I was 10 and I cooked my first meal at 13, my mom nearly cried.
I’m very grateful because having busy parents and knowing how to fend for yourself is a godsend.
I’m ashamed of eating cup noodles with the knowledge o a michelin chef but it’s even sadder knowing 20yo can’t make a meal, please teach your children.
We aren’t babies forever so teach us how to fend for ourselves and we’ll be eternally grateful and thankful

OMG, how time flies. My grandma taught me to do the most basic math and told me to do homework when I was a child. Now Im a 20yo and she still calls me everyday to ask me what I have for dinner 💙

No wonder Sutan loves her vegetables. Grandma and mom instilled her appreciation by growing the vegetables themselves. Sutan is growing up so fast. I hope she will never forget all the things her family taught her.

It's amazing how such a humble grain can bring so many people together! My grandma came from Haiti, and they settled in the Virginia's. She used to feed me a version of a rice porridge they used to eat. It was rice, butter and a little bit of sugar. I ate it and would sleep with a full tummy.

Sutan had lots of fun in the garden, just look how happy she was 🤗 I guess that’s how you also teach her to treasure food. The sweet potato & rice recipe reminds me of the Japanese movie “Oshin” which was very famous in Vietnam in 1990s.

It took me awhile to realize who was my real best friend me being 23 years old now I realized the only person I've been truly open to talking about anything with was my nana conversations on the phone literally are usually no less in 30 minutes but most times it's now or above I love her so much. And your family is so beautiful and it's a beautiful thing involving your parents in your growing family.❤️

If you have a grandma, you have the world. Only have one grandma left and I know she would gladly give me the only clothes she had just so I didn't get cold. Wish my grandma still had a piece of land to plant vegetables and for us to be able to pick them together ♥

It is amazing how much stimulation Sutan receives from the world around her! My neices and nephews are totally different. The oldest literally grew up with a ipad and is now addicted to roblox. The second oldest also grew up with an ipad. The third is now 1 year old and has just received his very own ipad. They rarely go out and their mom barely interacts with them. The oldest one doesn't even look up from his screen now at 8 years old! I am glad to see kids being raised away from electronics 24/7.
