The first Kozaks emerged in the Dzikie Pola, or wild fields, of the south-eastern expanses of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Originally composed runaway serfs, outlawed nobles and adventur seekers, these first Cossacks would forge the colonization of the Black Sea Steppes, which until then were not settled by Slavs but rather nomadic Turkic people's. Cossacks came to represent a pillar of Ruthenian (Ukrainian) identity in the Commonwealth. Initially, their founders also included famous Ruthenian magnates and nobles who led the Cossacks as allies of the Poles and Lithuanians.
Ukrainian Cossacks only allied with Muscovy out of strategic necessity in 1654 treaty of Pereyaslav. It was a treaty that was often resisted powerfully by Cosssacks as Muscovite intentions of domination became more apparent.

Russia does not have a monopoly on the history of Cossacks. And it is important to remember that the first Cossacks were the antithesis of the Russian conception of Cossacks as servants of the Czar. Original Cossacks operated under a military democracy, and resisted all states (Muscovite, Polish, Turkish) which sought to subdue them. And despite their wars against the szlachta, they operated under democratic systems largely analogous to those that were common in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

Aight here me out, as someone with Cossack heritage (Don and Kuban) I am sick of the arguments of who is from where and who they belong to? Honestly It’s a compliment that all these people want Cossacks to come from their nation but the truth is, Cossack means free man. Someone who fought for their freedom and fled where they came from to live a better life. Each Cossack host had different ethnicities in it, living in different regions in Russia, Ukraine, Poland and even Lithuania. I hope it’s the Cossacks that bring us together! 🤝

Zaporojan cossacks are mostly ruthene and polish run away peasants who settled in tatars land and Don cossacks are mostly russian runaway peasants from Ryhazan, Novgorod and Moscow who settled down in turkish and tatar territory end of the story
