I’m listing the ten most common mistakes writers make during the writing process. For example, how to write the middle of your novel the RIGHT way. For those of you looking for writing mistakes to avoid, I’m explaining all about telling instead of showing, writing too much fluff, and misusing commas and other punctuation. So if you’ve been wondering about the worst mistakes writers make, or just want to avoid these writing mistakes altogether, this video has you covered. The last tip might make you run screaming, but it’s worth listening to–trust me! 😉

Whenever I get lazy with writing, I have an irrational fear that Jenna will kick down my door and beat me up.

My hook is pretty simple, "Just remember if we get caught you're deaf and I don't speak English."

After your top 10 best and worst tropes, it'd be kinda neat to see like a "Top 5 overused and Top 5 underused fantasy tropes."

There was only one book that ever hooked me with the first sentence. It was:

“The building was on fire, and it wasn’t my fault.”

Dresden Files >> Blood Rites

"They're words, it's not that deep, " says the writer. 🤔

There are two ways these videos usually go. Either I make none of these mistakes or I make all of them.
Guess which one it usually is.

You've done videos on suspense, fear, romantic and platonic chemistry and other emotions. Could you possibly do a video in the future on evoking sadness through writing? I don't work for Pixar so my "hit people in the balls with sadness a la "Nemo" or "Up" capabilities is lacking.

I actually have a first sentence that has always stuck with me ... though I have never read the book it belongs to.

"I think he was dead before I shot him."

#7: "Marley was dead, to begin with.", "The Dursleys were proud to say they were normal everyday people", "It was the best of times it was the worst of times". Those are some first scentences that had me hooked.

The only book that has ever hooked me on the first sentence is "the school for good and evil" which starts with: "Sophie had waited all her life to be kidnapped"

I would just like to say a massive, massive thank you, Jenna.
Every time I need to psyche myself up for writing, I always start early to watch one of your videos first. Motivation can be a real struggle for me, but I'm constantly trying to work through it, and sorting through the issues in my writing can actually be fun when I think about the problems the way you describe them. Writing is such a huge part of my life, and you have no idea how much I appreciate having a little corner of the internet where I can go to solve my writing problems. So, thank you. You've really helped my writing improve.

I wonder if it is possible to go too far when it comes to "show, don't tell."

I was reading a self-published novel earlier, and it was written in first-person present-tense. The story was about a tribal princess and her arranged marriage, yet despite the use of first-person, we would rarely get an inward look at how the protagonist felt about the things happening in her life. Instead, whenever the author wanted to let people know that the princess was feeling angry, she would write something along the lines of "I clench my fists, " or when she would experience embarrassment or shame she would write "my face turns red." These descriptions would be written as if coming from someone observing someone else (seeing another person clench their fists, or blush) despite being in first-person as a result of being "shown, " yet we are rarely "told" anything about how the protagonist actually feels despite the story being told from her perspective.
