After I had made the music, started brainstorming vocal melody ideas. Realized the China cat melody fit nicely as both songs are made around a single G chord. My first inclination was to do a china cat remix and pull Jerry’s vocals from a live version. Just as I was about to do that when I wondered if I could write new lyrics to the melody.

Honestly, I was doubtful. Robert Hunter is one of greatest lyricists of all time. It would be impossible to do anything better than he has already done. But I was curious if I could at least write something I would be proud of while sitting next to such a beautiful piece of art.

I gave myself a 15 minute challenge. If I could not come up with something compelling in that time I would continue on trying to add Jerry in for a remix. Luckily, the ideas started to pour out and in 15 mins I had something that I was really excited about.

This was creative experiment for me to see what was possible. And such a joy to participate in this creative expression with Jerry & Hunter through space & time. This version was made with all love and respect of the Dead. It was born from a place of pure fun and curiosity.
